Description: This is a craft and workshop hybrid class where you’ll learn the fundamentals of poetry, including the importance of structure and how it relates to your poem’s content, strengthening your poem’s imagery, and developing your poetic voice. You will read selected poems that correlate with the lesson plan and you will workshop your work with your classmates and with the instructor. Several brief in-class writing exercises will be offered. You do not need workshopping experience to attend this class. Students of all levels are welcome.
About the instructor: Jane Craven lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. She holds a B.A. in English from UNC-Chapel Hill and an MFA in Creative Writing - Poetry from North Carolina State University. She has worked in corporate systems development and as the director of a contemporary art museum. Her poems have appeared in The Columbia Review, Tar River Poetry, The Texas Review, The Carolina Quarterly, and Atlanta Review, among others. She is the recipient of a 2018 Universities and Colleges Academy of American Poets prize, a finalist for the Rita Dove Prize in Poetry, and winner of the 2019 Cloudbank Poetry Prize.
